In a recent Forbes magazine article, the healthcare consulting group Merchant Medicine reported that there are now 836 MinuteClinic locations and 70 Target Clinic locations nationwide. These numbers are poised to increase soon.
MinuteClinic was finally cleared to open retail clinics in Rhode Island in May after staunch opposition for the past nine years from physicians and other groups. And it plans to open 10 more facilities in Massachusetts before the end of the year.
Meanwhile, Target Clinic is planning to launch 8 new retail clinics in the Dallas area by the fall. They currently have retail health clinics in 70 stores nationwide, primarily focusing in Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, North Carolina, and Virginia. This is particularly interesting considering Rite Aid’s recent acquisition of RediClinic’s 30 facilities in Texas, which we wrote about in August.
Walgreens also has 388 health clinics, while Krogers has 119 and Wal-Mart has 92, according to Merchant Medicine. There are now over 1,600 retail health clinics in the country.
